Sea Island is its own barrier island, east of St. Simons and reached by causeway from it, with the Atlantic along its outer shore. It is one of the Golden Isles, the region Georgia’s tourism office defines as Brunswick and four barrier islands, and it belongs to neither Brunswick nor St. Simons, though it is often spoken of as part of both.
What stands here was built as a single piece rather than grown over generations. Howard Coffin bought the beachfront in 1926 and founded the Sea Island Company, and the original Cloister opened its doors in October 1928.
The Cloister on Cloister Drive and the Sea Island Beach Club remain the landmarks, and both are private resort property rather than public parks. Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources states plainly that there is no public beach access to Sea Island from the mainland.
That private character runs through the island’s legal structure as much as its atmosphere. Sea Island has no municipal government and is not a Census-designated place, so it carries no Census population of its own, and Glynn County describes it as a corporately owned planned community while identifying Brunswick as the county’s only incorporated area.
Because of all that, any population figure published for Sea Island depends on whose boundary was used and in which year, which is why we do not print one. The Sea Island Company is the island’s employer and Glynn County names it among the county’s largest. Glynn County Schools serves the island, and Brunswick Golden Isles Airport is the nearest airport with scheduled passenger service.
