Port Wentworth is growing quickly. The 2020 Census counted 10,878 residents and 4,424 housing units, and the estimate for July 2025 was 17,604, sixty-two percent above the count in five years. Only thirteen of those homes were held for seasonal or occasional use.
The work is right next door. The Port of Savannah and the airport with Gulfstream Aerospace are both immediately adjacent, and the city’s own visitor guide names the Target Distribution Center, Imperial Sugar, the IKEA Distribution Center, Rice Creek School, the City of Port Wentworth and Noritake among its largest employers. Port Wentworth is where the people who run all of that can live.
The city sits on the mainland west of the Savannah River and northwest of downtown Savannah, stretched along GA 21 on both sides of I-95 Exit 109. GA 25 crosses the river here, and two of the spans around the city have been replaced, with GDOT opening the new Houlihan Bridge in July 2024 and the new Middle River Bridge in April 2025.
Older ground survives among the industry. The Mulberry Grove Site, listed on the National Register in 1975, is where Eli Whitney worked on the cotton gin, and the National Park Service does not publish its location. The Houston Praise House site at 8000 GA Highway 21, associated with Rice Hope Plantation, appears in Port Wentworth’s own historical driving-tour brochure as an African American religious and cultural site.
The city keeps its own places to get outside. Houlihan Boat Landing off GA 25 puts boats on the Savannah River with ramps and floating docks, Armadale Park on Armadale Road has a third of a mile of paved path and disc golf, and Lewis Mobley Park holds the playground, football and soccer field and three baseball diamonds. Port Wentworth dates its founding to 1733 and incorporated in 1957, and Savannah-Chatham County Public School System serves it.
