Midway

Midway is small and carries a great deal of history for its size. Puritans came down from Dorchester, South Carolina in 1752 and founded the settlement, and the Midway Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1973, still holds the 1792 Midway Church, its cemetery, the Midway Museum and a surviving stretch of the Old Sunbury Road.

A short distance from that stands the Dorchester Academy Boys’ Dormitory, which housed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s citizenship education program and is where the 1963 Birmingham campaign was planned. It went on the National Register in 1986 and was made a National Historic Landmark in 2006.

The landscape around those buildings is open to walk. The Cay Creek Wetland Interpretive Center at 189 Charlie Butler Road runs a boardwalk out across freshwater wetland, brackish water and salt marsh, with a creek dock and a fifteen-foot observation tower. Seven miles east of I-95 Exit 76, Fort Morris State Historic Site interprets the defense of Sunbury on the Medway River.

The town incorporated in 1925 and sits on US 17, a short way east of that same I-95 exit, where US 84 runs west through the county. That junction brought the industry in. The Liberty County Development Authority lists Midway Industrial Park as holding Hugo Boss distribution, Elan Technology, SNF Floquip, Builders FirstSource, Balta Home USA and GT FA, the Daesin robotics operation, and Tradeport East nearby as carrying Target, Howmet Aerospace, Seohan Automotive Georgia, Western Power Sports, Tire Rack and Hankook Tire.

Midway has stayed small alongside all that. The Census counted 2,141 residents and 845 housing units in 2020, and the estimate for July 2025 was 2,387, 11.5 percent above the count. Seven of those homes were held for seasonal or occasional use. Liberty County School System serves the town and runs Liberty Elementary and Midway Middle at Midway addresses.
