Ridgeland

Ridgeland is the Jasper County seat, an inland town that grew up around the Charleston and Savannah Railroad depot and was incorporated on Christmas Eve 1894. I-95 exits 21 and 22 both lead into it.

Exit 21 also brings you to the Blue Heron Nature Center, ten acres with a half mile loop, a boardwalk out over the wetland and a path back along the pond. Downtown, the Jasper County Courthouse anchors the block, built in 1915 to a Georgian Revival design by William Augustus Edwards, with the Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage nearby and Harold Turpin Park, which the town runs itself, a short way off. The Honey Hill battlefield, where the fighting took place on November 30, 1864, is part of the town’s history.

Ridgeland is a town people live in the whole year round. The Census counted 3,758 residents and 1,151 housing units in 2020, and the estimate for July 2025 was 3,818, under two percent above the count. Only 14 of those homes were held for seasonal or occasional use, so very nearly every house in Ridgeland has somebody living in it.

What we handle here is mostly single family and much of it is new construction, which is a different thing from the town’s older housing stock. The work is steady too. Jasper County government at 350 employees, Jasper County School District at 341 and Ridgeland Correctional Institution at 109 appear in the county’s 2024 principal-employer schedule, though those are countywide totals rather than jobs inside the town line.

The town’s own 2024 planning report, drawing on the 2018 to 2022 American Community Survey, gives the industries its residents work in: professional, scientific, management, administrative and waste management services at 14.4 percent, education, health care and social assistance at 14.1, arts, entertainment, recreation, accommodation and food services at 13.8, retail at 12.6 and construction at 11.6. Those are where residents work rather than a count of jobs sitting inside the town line. Jasper County School District serves the town, and Ridgeland-Claude Dean Airport handles general aviation rather than scheduled flights.

One boundary note, because it is not obvious from a map. Census records show Ridgeland annexed territory into Beaufort County in April 2008, so the town is not exclusively in Jasper County, although the Beaufort County portion has no recorded population.
