- Laborer - A person hired by the van operator or agent to assist in the loading and unloading of goods
- Last Receiving - A deadline date and time specified by a carrier by which cargo must be received at a designated location so that such cargo can be boarded on a particular vessel, aircraft, truck or railcar
- Less than Container Load (LCL) - Where your shipment does not fill a complete shipping container
- Liftvans - A crate used in the packing of your belongings
- Linehaul - The charge to move your shipment by road from point of collection (which could be at the dockside) to its final point of destination
- Load Date - The date on which the shipment is actually picked up
- Load Spread - Agreed pick-up dates
- Loading Ramp - Provided by self-service movers to help you load your household goods onto the trailer
- Long Carry Charge - An additional charge incurred when articles must be carried an excessive distance to the movers truck
- Local moving - Local moving usually refers to moves of less than 100 miles within the same state. This type of move is based on hourly rates and is regulated by the states DOT (Department of Transportation) or other regulatory body
- Long Carry - Carrying goods the distance from the van to the outside entrance of a home or inside entrance of an apartment in excess of 75 feet. Each 50 feet after, or fraction thereof, is chargeable

- Marine Insurance – Insurance specifically to cover your belongings whilst in transit over long distances and/or across water by vehicle, ship or aircraft. The policy will cover specific marine risks
- Mechanical Damage - Damage to an item because of mechanical malfunctions, not mishandling from the van operator
- Mileage Guide - Official guide specified by tariff and used by carriers to determine mileage from one city to another, regardless of the route actually driven

- Order for Service - The authorizing document allowing movers to move your goods
- Order Number - Also known as the Bill of Lading. It's the number used to identify and track your shipment
- Origin Agent - The moving company appointed to handle your move at origin
- Overflow (OF) - The portion of a shipment that cannot be loaded on one van or into one container due to lack of available space. Another van is assigned to load overflow portions
- Overtime (OT) - A CWT charge to the customer where, because of customer convenience, laws or ordinances, the shipment is delivered after the normal business hours of Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It cannot be charged if it is at the mover’s convenience
